TAG Heuer and Louis Vuitton Unveil An Icon Reimagined: The Stunning Monaco Speed 12 Watch
The Heuer Monaco, launched in 1969, was lauded as one of the world’s first automatic chronographs and the inaugural square, water-resistant chronograph wristwatch. Over the years, it has remained an undeniable staple among enthusiasts, thanks to its distinctive design and tie-ins with the high-speed world of motorsport. The TAG Heuer Monaco has seen a multitude of updates, each adding a unique flavour while maintaining the essence of the original timepiece. Its latest iteration carries forward this winning legacy with ambitious fervor. The Monaco Speed 12 was unveiled during the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco 2026, showcasing groundbreaking design elements inspired by performance engines. As the result of a collaboration with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, this limited edition creation features a Spin Time movement, freshly redesigned to create a motor-inspired indication unseen in previous Monaco collections. The Monaco Speed 12 stays true to the original watch’s signature square shape but takes a stride towards the future with a more technical aesthetic. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, the 40mm case showcases alternating brushed and polished surfaces and is adorned with a sapphire bezel, a domed sapphire crystal and a sapphire caseback. Designed to reflect the genius of automotive engineering, the entire dial is openworked with a vertical groove in the center that might remind one of an engine cover. The minutes hand tipped in red could easily belong to a race car dashboard. Moreover, twelve rotating pistons accent the display ring and turn at the start of the hour, revealing numerals on dedicated pistons – not unlike the firing sequence in a twelve-cylinder engine. These moving elements add an animating aesthetic to the timepiece, mimicking the principles of jumping-hour watches.
