Citizen Unveils Spectacular Photon Eco-Drive, an Artistic Tribute to 50 Years of Light-Charging Tech

Published: 02 Sep 2026
Embarking on the celebration of its Eco-Drive technology's golden jubilee, Citizen launches the eco-inspired Photon.

In a grand celebration marked in NYC, Japanese watchmaker Citizen welcomed the 50th anniversary of its disruptive Eco-Drive technology, a light-charging quartz watch movement introduced back in 1976 with its timepiece, the Crystron. The festivities were highlighted with the unveiling of a new timepiece, an embodiment of contemporary watch design embedded with the light-powered flair, aptly named the Eco-Drive Photon. This stunning creation harmoniously marries artistry, technology and light, delivering an unrivalled wearable experience.\

Endowed with Citizen’s latest Eco-Drive quartz movements, the Photon promises a staggering year-long battery life from full-charge. It shines with the brand’s revered Super Titanium casing and bracelet, ensuring durability without compromising on its svelte appeal. Aligning itself mid-tier in terms of pricing, the Photon is a balance of affordability and luxury, catering to both watch connoisseurs and enthusiasts drawn to Citizen’s innovative spirit. \

Citizen’s design philosophy for the Photon prioritized comfort and wearability without negating aesthetics. Despite appearing larger, it sits snugly on the wrist with a 39.6mm-wide and 9.9mm-thick cushion-style casing. Water-resistant to 50 meters, it houses a beautifully domed sapphire crystal. An interesting design nuance is the dial text positioned on the sapphire crystal underside, achieving a clear print on a non-traditional surface. This small detail exemplifies Citizen’s commitment to innovative design while preserving practicality and legibility.
