American watchmaker Timex revisits its roots with new timeless, affordable Marlin Chatham Automatic
A stalwart of American watchmaking, Timex has a rich history of producing reliable, accessible timepieces. Despite shifting focus solely to quartz during the quartz crisis in the 70s and 80s, effectively halting mechanical watch production, the brand was eventually drawn back into the world of hand-wound watches in 2017 with the release of the Seagull-powered 34mm Marlin Mechanical. This marked a turning point for the brand that led to the launch of the upscale Giorgio Galli models and the Atelier Collection over the succeeding years. Their latest release is the Marlin Chatham Automatic, a watch that surprises with its retro styling, pared-back elegance, and traditional design elements.
Available in two styles with identical specifications, the Marlin Chatham features a vintage-inspired cushion-shaped case. Evoking the elegance of Cartier’s Tortue, Patek’s 5940 and 3670, and Journe’s Vagabondage series, the polished case measures a compact 36mm in width and 44.5mm in length. A 12mm thickness accommodates the outsourced automatic movement while the watch offers a respectable 50m water resistance. It sports a mineral crystal atop the case, a nod to the watch’s affordability.
The dial of the Marlin Chatham draws on retro influences, featuring Breguet-styled applied numerals and polished hands devoid of luminosity. Such design elements are usually reserved for high-end watchmaking, but Timex delivers them in an exceedingly accessible package, proving that affordability and classic elegance can peacefully coexist.
