James Bond's Wristwatch Star: Omega's New Seamaster Spectre Edition

Omega unleashes its new Seamaster Diver 300M 'Spectre' Edition, a impressive dive watch promising the luxury of exclusivity and the charm of James Bond 007.

Omega, the Swiss watchmaker, renowned for its luxury timepieces, launched the eye-catching Seamaster Diver 300M ‘Spectre’ edition. Breaking the typical Omega luxury boundaries, with an $8,600 price tag, the Seamaster Spectre still stands as a bargain considering its peer set. In comparison, the brand has produced two limited edition dual watch sets, each set costing a whopping $89,800. Despite its premium tag, the Spectre falls under the current $10,050 retail price of a stainless steel no-date Submariner. An alternative option for enthusiasts might be the Daniel Craig Seamaster Diver 300M, a similar model priced at a more accessible $7,300. Sporting the same caliber 8806 movement, a comparable case design, and a close resemblance with the Spectre Seamaster 300M, it could present a compelling alternative. The Seamaster Spectre has caused a stir in the industry, especially with its Milanese mesh bracelet, described by some as slightly stiff with a thick clasp. Some critics suggest that a premium integrated FKM black rubber strap would have made a fitting companion to the bracelet. Still, the wristband received overall positive reception for its overall quality. The timepiece owes its naming to the 2015 James Bond movie Spectre, and although the film isn’t much remembered, the association has certainly fanned the flames of desirability. Interestingly, the ‘Spectre’ acronym serves as an Easter egg, connecting numerous Bond films underlined by Omega’s 30-year association with the franchise. Reinforcing its Bond ties, the Seamaster Spectre features an octopus motif on the case back, offering something visually fresh in an era of iterative design. Apart from its Bond-inspired branding, the watch dazzles with a stainless steel case, a black ceramic ring, a laser-ablated in positive relief diving scale, skeletonized and polished hands, rhodium-plated indexes filled with white Super-LumiNova. Encasing it all, a polished-brushed caseback showcases the automatic caliber 8806 Spectre movement. With a 3.5Hz frequency and a 55-hour power reserve, the caliber is visible through a flat sapphire crystal, while the caseback is engraved with ‘NAIAD LOCK’, ‘DIVER 300M’, ‘water resistance’ and ‘Spectre’. All this magic comes packaged in a black, push-button box bearing the Spectre logo. Omega, while praised for their craftsmanship, is known for producing many versions of a single model. In this case too, they’ve introduced six references, two of which feature incongruent alligator leather straps and precious metal cases. Despite criticisms for their oversized lineup, the brand’s significant paid relationship with the James Bond franchise explains their prolific output, and they’ve certainly pulled off a spectacle with the Seamaster Diver 300M Spectre Edition.
