Swiss Watchmaker Mido Releases Special-edition Multifort TV Big Date Honoring Mexico’s Day of the Dead
For the past seven years, renowned Swiss watchmaker, Mido, has been marking Mexico’s Día de los Muertos—Day of the Dead—with specially designed timepieces. This year, they bring the celebration to wristwear through the release of the Multifort TV Big Date Día de los Muertos Alebrijes. This particular model stands out from Mido’s previous releases as it features a vibrant calavera, or skull motif, a hallmark of the holiday’s artistic traditions, on the brand’s retro-inspired Multifort TV collection for the first time.
The Multifort TV Big Date watch showcases Mido’s finely honed craftsmanship, amalgamating colourful design with automatic Caliber 80 movement. The timepiece exudes a distinctly Mexican flair, breathing life into one of Mido’s standout contemporary models.
The inspiration for the watch not only extends to Día de los Muertos but also reflects the fantastical creatures known as alebrijes. These colourful creatures, blending elements of various animals into imaginative models, originated in the 1930s under the artistic hand of Mexican artist Pedro Linares. Today, alebrijes have become an important representation of Mexican folk art, finding their place within the visual traditions of Día de los Muertos.
Mido’s metaphorical journey with Día de los Muertos started in 2020 when the Swiss watchmaker decided to release annual special-edition watches honouring the holiday. Initially, these captivating timepieces solely catered for the Mexican market but quickly gained popularity, moving across borders to reach an international clientele. The incorporation of the calavera motif within the unique case and creative date display paints a new face to the Multifort TV Big Date lineup. The highly detailed dial shines in the spotlight with its grey-to-black gradient complemented by colourful skull and animal motifs. Advances in Swiss Super-LumiNova add enchanting illuminations to the dial, unveiling a secondary visual identity for the timepiece emblematic of a festival celebrated with light, colour, and mystic entities.
