Pushing the Waters of Innovation: Unveiling Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms Tech Ref. 5019A, a Purpose-Driven Dive Watch

Published: 14 Jul 2026
The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech Ref. 5019A, an evolved version of the iconic Fifty Fathoms, is revolutionising the world of dive watches with its innovative purpose-driven design.

In the realm of dive watches, conservatism is generally the order of the day - sturdy cases, luminous hands, and markers, and a rotating bezel. However, Blancpain, the pioneering brand behind the classic Fifty Fathoms dive watch, has recently taken a leap of innovation with the Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa in 2023, developed with advanced closed-circuit rebreather diving in mind.

This watch represents a significant departure from traditional diving watches’ conventional 60-minute timing system, substituting it with a fresh, patented three-hour timing system. The idea for this innovatory feature resulted from a collaboration between Blancpain CEO and professional diver Marc A. Hayek, and underwater photographer and biologist Laurent Ballesta. The duo’s Gombessa Expeditions, which study rare marine creatures and phenomena, serve as the inspiration for this groundbreaking change.

While the Fifty Fathoms Tech is undeniably large and designed as a purpose-built diving instrument, the titanium casing makes it more manageable than the dimensions suggest. Adorned with satin-finished surfaces that complement its technical character, the watch proudly displays its robust design with its helium escape valve, screw-down crown, and 300-meter water resistance.
