The Venus Zodiac: A Portal to Planetary Mechanics, Elegantly Crafted by Christiaan van der Klaauw
Originating in 1974, the Netherlands-based brand Christiaan van der Klaauw has marked its presence in the watchmaking industry by exclusively focusing on astronomical complications. The brand’s artistry lies in its ability to translate cosmic phenomena into wearable mechanical masterpieces. After the introduction of its CKM-01 calibre in 2024, the brand took a step further by adding the Venus Zodiac and Venus Annual Calendar models to its contemporary collection.
What further enhances the Zodiac’s beauty is the non-rotating peripheral flange highlighting zodiac signs, with transitions signified by markers between the signs. The radiant aventurine dial covers minor gaps amidst the rotating discs, offering a seamless look. Unconventionally, the integrated moon-phase display reveals the phase in context of the relative positions of Sun, Earth, and Moon within the dial’s planetarium. Gold Breguet-style open-tipped hour and minute hands atop the 12-clawed Sun in the center complete the thematic layout. This model isn’t merely about precise time reading; it’s a cathartic voyage into our universe.
Encapsulating the exquisitely crafted celestial display is a newly designed 38mm casing, available in stainless steel or rose gold. The botanic details of the dial have been accommodated subtly in a compact casing. The earthy tones of the dial, the near-absent bezel, and gently domed sapphire crystal complement each other, producing an overall elegant sight. The watch also features a straight screwed lug with an onion-style crown, contributing to the refinement of the piece. On the reverse, the watch reveals its true mechanical prowess; the CKM-01 calibre, a union of Andreas Strehler’s base movement and the fine-tuned astronomical Venus module.
