Introducing Oris' Lou Gehrig Limited Edition: A Big Crown Pointer Date Timepiece Inspired by a Baseball Legend
Oris has once again made horological waves with the introduction of its limited edition Lou Gehrig timepiece. Inspired by the legacy of this iconic baseball player, the watch, belonging to the renowned Big Crown Pointer Date line, seamlessly blends athletic history with horological precision. The distinct design and craftsmanship render this model a rightful heir to the illustrious Oris Big Crown lineage, which was initiated in 1938, renowned for its large crown operable while wearing gloves.
Building upon the legacy of the brand’s previous baseball-themed watches – the Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron limited editions— this Lou Gehrig version further illustrates Oris’ commitment to significant causes, with proceeds supporting the Lou and Eleanor Gehrig Family Foundation.
The model resonates with his influence, featuring a 40mm steel case decorated with alternating brushed and polished finishes, holding water resistance up to 50m. Notably, the engraved baseman delivering his farewell speech on the caseback capitalizes on the intimate ties to Gehrig’s journey. The dial incorporates the Yankees’ grey, white, and navy blue colors while the hour numerals and indices are treated with white Super-LumiNova under blue outlining.
True to its sports heritage, the timepiece is paired with a double-stitched brown suede leather strap reminiscent of a baseball glove. Additionally, the watch is powered by the Oris calibre 754, an automatic movement with an esteemed Sellita SW 200-1 base. The model is restricted to 2,130 pieces, a clear nod to Gehrig’s unmatched streak, priced at CHF 2,400.
