The Son Mai Guilloché Main: An Inspiring Unification of Vietnamese Lacquer Art and Hand-Guilloché in Watchmaking

Published: 20 May 2026
Awake, the French indie watch brand, pays tribute to traditional craftsmanship with its new Son Mai Guilloché Main, a limited edition blending Vietnamese lacquer art with hand-guilloché.

Venturing beyond its space-themed watches, Awake commemorates its fifth anniversary with a new collection - Son Mai Guilloché Main. This remarkable collection sees the harmonious fusion of two ancestral artistry forms, Vietnamese Son Mai lacquer and hand-guilloché motifs, in bespoke timepieces.

Witnessing the enduring tradition of Son Mai lacquer in a 2008 trip to Vietnam, Awake’s founder, Lilian Thibault, brought this technique to horology. The new line features impressive advance in design with dials, conceived by expert lacquerers from Hanoia, a prestigious Vietnamese atelier. Additionally, these dials are accentuated with sophisticated hand-guilloché, performed by Italy’s Renzetti family with 19th-century lathes, creating captivating texture and depth.

All three models carry Awake’s signature luminescence. Instead of utilizing Super-LumiNova on the hands and indices’ top, they’re comprised of a sturdy SLN BGW9 base, topped with a polished steel overlay, causing light to emerge akin to a halo.

Adding to the novelty, the new Son Mai Guilloché watches are presented in a redesigned stainless steel case that’s not only more compact but also has improved depth rating of up to 100 meters.

Spearheading innovation while acknowledging tradition, Awake’s Son Mai Guilloché Main collection combines style, craftsmanship, and functionality.
