In the annals of horology, Louis Moinet (1768-1853) is a name to be reckoned with. This visionary crafted the Compteur de Tierces in 1815-1816 to accurately track celestial motions. The chronographic marvel was endowed with a start, stop, and reset function and featured a balance wheel with the impressive high beat frequency of 30Hz, enabling it to time events up to the sixtieth of a second. This forward-thinking stopwatch is considered a precursor to the modern chronograph and was rediscovered in 2013.

In a tribute to this iconic timepiece, Louis Moinet unveiled the 1816 Tourbillon Chronograph as the third entry in a historic sequence. This new release pays homage to Louis Moinet’s 210-year-old chronograph lineage, wrapping up an impressive trilogy that started with the 1806 Chronomètre d’Observatoire, and was followed by the 1816 Chronograph.

The most fervent embodiment of the trilogy, the 1816 Tourbillon Chronograph, infuses the iconic invention of both Louis Moinet and Abraham-Louis Breguet, his close friend and contemporary. Revered as the founding fathers of modern watchmaking, these timekeeping gurus collaborated between 1815 and 1832.

Housed in a lightweight 40.6mm titanium case, the 1816 Tourbillon Chronograph speaks the language of contemporary design while preserving the unique characteristics of its 19th-century predecessor. With its monopusher design, the new reference has a large pump-style pusher at 2 o’clock, in line with Louis Moinet’s steampunk aesthetic. The combination of polished and satin-brushed surfaces provide a modern touch, merging seamlessly with the integrated titanium bracelet. The clarity of its grey rhodium-plated dial - with its subtle blue and ruby details - upholds the renowned legibility of the original.

The watch doesn’t fade on the functionality front with two sub-dials displaying 30-minute elapsed times and running seconds while a large aperture uncovers a splendid off-centred flying tourbillon.
