Making Time Tangible: Discover Hampden’s First Hand Watch Workshop Where Enthusiasts Assemble their Own Swiss Mechanical Watches

In the realm of watch connoisseurship, understanding the mechanics behind a watch’s movement often remains confined to observation. Piquing this curiosity and taking up the challenge, Hampden Watch launched its First Hand Watchmaking Workshop in December 2025, testing whether enthusiasts could learn enough in a day to disassemble and reassemble a Swiss mechanical movement and produce a wearable, functioning wristwatch.

Channeling the excitement and bewilderment of over 200 participants in 30 consecutive sold-out sessions, Hampden has turned what started as an experiment into a permanent program. The intimate sessions are confined to six participants and three instructors, ensuring an enriching hands-on experience.

High-quality binocular microscopes replace traditional watchmaking loupes to give a crisp view of the mechanics. This not only curtails the frustration that might arise out of physical strain but also makes the process fun. Participants assemble under the same conditions as in a production factory, using custom fixtures and tooling.

As testimonies of its success, the program continually sells out sessions and has workshops scheduled through 2027. It’s no hyperbolic statement that Hampden’s First Hand initiative is crafting not just wristwatches, but a new breed of watch enthusiasts themselves.
