Bidding Farewell to Counterfeiting: The Dawn of DNA-Sequenced Luxury Watches

Published: 14 May 2026
Ascend into unprecedented territory in the horological world where your timepiece flaunts its very own DNA.

In the current climate of escalating counterfeiting and demand for transparent sourcing, luxury brands are adopting remarkable measures. Several high-profile watch and jewellery brands are embracing traceability programs, with technology such as blockchain providing digital passports for their products. Yet, one audacious player has taken material traceability to a whole new level, transformed the very essence of luxury items with their trailblazing application.

In 2016, the Swiss company Haelixa set out on a mission to revolutionise traceability within supply chains by developing a patented DNA-based technology. Their innovative solution can authenticate a product’s origin, from raw materials to finished goods. The company initially set the wheels in motion by marking raw textiles with DNA markers. The markers were then extended to precious metals and gemstones, which could be applied directly at the source – mines and refineries.

Haelixa’s nano-sized DNA technology overcomes the common decay of DNA in living organisms via a patented encapsulation method that protects the DNA strands. Contrary to what some may believe, the application process described by Link as ‘quite simple.’ All things considered, the DNA-based technology from Haelixa could chart a new course for the luxury industry, allowing for unprecedented authentication and counter-counterfeiting capabilities.
