Porsche Design Unveils New All-Titanium Chronograph 1 Amidst Opening of a New Swiss Timepieces Facility
Porsche Design has unveiled a new variant of its proven Chronograph 1, a subtle yet impactful reinvention aligned with the opening of a new production facility in Grenchen, Switzerland. While the changes to the timepiece might appear nominal, they are indicative of Porsche Design’s commitment to precision and ongoing innovation within the horological realm.
Journeying back into its history, Porsche Design has seen various iconic figures influencing its watch journey. The original Chronograph 1, released in 1972, bore the craftsmanship of Orfina with the co-branding of Porsche Design. The brand’s conception of designs later transcended through IWC and then Eterna, the recently acquired subsidiary, before finally moving production under Porsche Design Timepieces AG in 2014.
Porsche clients who journey to Germany for their car collection can now extend their travel to Switzerland for a fully customized watch that perfectly accompanies their vehicle. The public area of the facility incorporates a design studio where clients can personalize their timepieces, providing an experience akin to designing their own Porsche.
Looking forward, Porsche Design sees the new development as an essential step towards strengthening its presence in the watch world. Now as an independent entity with its own space, the company holds higher autonomy in making decisions for the long run.
Surprisingly, the majority of watches produced by Porsche Design form part of their customisation program rather than the flagship Chronograph 1. However, owing to its strong heritage ties and meaningful association with F.A. Porsche, the Chronograph 1 remains a crucial pillar in the collection and a valid testament to Porsche Design’s horological prowess.
