Paving the Path: The Maen Hudson MK5's Subtle Updates Keeping Pace with Microbrands

Published: 13 Mar 2026
The Maen Hudson 38 MK5 holds its classic charm while embracing necessary updates. A fusion between vintage and modern in the microbrand watch sector.

Eight years ago, the Stockholm-based brand Maen made its first breakthrough with the original Hudson. Initially backed on Kickstarter, the Hudson became a mainstay of divers and anchor of the microbrand sector, changing the timepiece landscape of the late 2010s. Fast forward to the present, and we find the Maen Hudson 38 MK5 carrying on that legacy, while stepping up to match the evolved market preferences.

The Hudson MK5 still features its classic 38mm case design (a nod to its Kickstarter days when an optional 42mm was also on offer), but now comes with slight thickness adjustment from 10.5mm to 11mm and with the addition of a box sapphire crystal, it measures at 13.2mm. However, thanks to its compact design, and 47mm lug-to-lug dimensions, the Hudson MK5 sits comfortably on a 7-inch wrist.

Vintage aesthetics are a notable feature of the Hudson MK5. The polished chamfer along the edge of the case, reminiscent of classic Rolexes, is now a thing of the past in this model. Instead, the watch offers sleek curves, thin midcase, polished flanks, and drilled lugs. Not forgetting its modest fluted case back, resonating with the lovers of classic timepieces, while maintaining modern robustness.

However, amidst all its robust specifications, doubts arise from the protruding crown, which seems a bit much. An aspect of design that might divert affection for some. Yet, it doesn’t hold back the Hudson MK5 from being a narrative of how consistency, and well-thought upgrades can keep a traditional brand successful in the ever-evolving microbrand sector.
