Delving into the Intricate Craftsmanship of Model R, Tertium Quid's Stellar Debut Watch with a Vintage Twist

Published: 23 Jan 2026
Emerging from the flurry of Japanese indie watchmakers, Tertium Quid delivers a captivating debut with its Model R watch.

Determined to leave a lasting impression, Tertium Quid’s debut piece, the Model R watch, showcases an exquisite blend of poignant nostalgia and modern precision. This new watch is the brainchild of Shun Horiuchi and Taku Yamashina, a duo of passionate watch enthusiasts who transform their love for horology into a tangible reality.
With the creation of Tertium Quid, they aim to introduce a ’third entity’ into the life of a devoted watch collector. The precise nature of these first two entities remains delightfully elusive, adding a layer of curiosity to the brand’s identity. More than just watch enthusiasts, the duo leverages their strong networking within the Japanese and Swiss watch industries.
The characterising feature of Model R is its alarm mechanism — a unique innovation amongst modern watches. With a stainless steel body, the timepiece is visually striking with a dual crown set-up, sapphire crystal top and a transparent case back showcasing the intricacies of its movement. It is designed with meticulous care to ensure a comfortable wear at a size of 38mm in diameter and a height of 11.1mm.
Model R promises to engage its users with its multifaceted functionality, which includes a top crown for setting the running time and a bottom crown dedicated to the alarm feature. However, it comes with the advice of avoiding water, which may interfere with its precise mechanical workings. The watch showcases a Sector-style dial in black and silver, a timeless style choice that balances tradition and trend beautifully.
Soon to join the ranks of celebrated Japanese indie watchmakers, Tertium Quid sparks interest with its quiet devotion to craft and its unusual approach to watchmaking. As the watch world eagerly awaits what lies ahead, one thing is clear: Tertium Quid has firmly set the alarm ringing in the industry already.
