TAG Heuer astonishes watch enthusiasts with its new Carrera model, which prominently features an intricate split-seconds chronograph mechanism.

Embracing the thrill of the race, TAG Heuer debuts its riveting Carrera Split-Seconds Chronograph. Sporting a complex split-seconds chronograph mechanism, this watch effortlessly marries utility with elegance. Regardless of a few minor challenges, the Carrera Split-Seconds Chronograph commands attention with its elaborate design and intricate features.

The watch showcases a masterfully crafted grade 5 titanium case. This alloy, known for its enhanced hardness compared to grade 2 titanium, endows the watch with superior durability. The case, measuring 42mm in diameter and a considerable 15.17mm in thickness, holds a bezel-free box-type sapphire crystal dial cover, shielded on the rear by a slightly domed sapphire and titanium caseback fastened with four screws. Despite its apparent thickness, the case design caters to various wrist sizes, offering comfortable wearability thanks to the lightweight titanium construction.

At the heart of this captivating timepiece lies the split-seconds chronograph. Also known as a rattrapante, this mechanism facilitates the recording of lap times, thus aligning perfectly with TAG Heuer’s racing heritage. It features a central secondary chronograph wrist that enables the time measurement of simultaneous events of different durations. Powered by caliber TH81-01, a derivative of the Vaucher caliber VMF6710, the watch boasts of automatic winding, twin column wheels for the split-seconds, a high frequency 5Hz rate enabling 1/10th of a second precision, and a power reserve of 65 hours.

Another distinct feature is TAG Heuer’s choice of titanium for the mainplate and bridges. Usually constructed from brass, this lightweight and sturdy choice illustrates the watchmaker’s innovative spirit. The hand-finishing on parts of the movement reflects an unusual step for TAG Heuer, including a painstakingly applied checkered flag motif and polished, not beveled edges.

Despite movement decoration being an area where brands often intentionally leave ambiguous descriptions, TAG Heuer’s Carrera Split-Seconds Chronograph indicates a fresh direction for the brand. This interesting blend of high-tech mechanical horology coupled with the allure of TAG Heuer’s racing pedigree solidifies the watch’s place amongst modern horological masterpieces.
