Photography Powerhouse Leica Branches into Watches with the ZM 12: A Fusion of Depth and Dynamism

Over a century and a half, Leica has mastered the essence of photography—light and shadow. Extending its expertise from crafting exceptional optics, Leica forayed into a new realm in 2022—horology, with the introduction of timepieces reflecting the brand’s precision engineering and distinctive aesthetic. The Leica ZM 12 is the latest addition to Leica’s horological lineup, a refined and compact version of the ZM 11 with a 39mm case and striking colors on the dynamic dual-layer dial.

Achieving this resulted in a groundbreaking dial with two distinct layers. A technological challenge, as maintaining thinness while ensuring the watch’s overall slim profile required innovation. Following rigorous trials, Leica perfected an etching technology seldom used in the industry. The outcome is a 0.4mm dial boasting depth that defies its precise dimensions.

The diamond-cut hands showcase a play of light that adds to the dial’s dimensionality, thanks to a mix of brushed and sand-blasted surfaces. The hands and indices contain Swiss Grade A Super-LumiNova for easy reading in low light conditions.

The ZM 12 is offered in four vibrant iterations: Steel Blue Orange, Steel Silver Grey, Steel Olive Black, and Titanium Chocolate Black. Each variety presents a color-shifting, dynamic dual-layer dial complemented by carefully selected case materials. Refined further from the ZM 11, the ZM 12 features a 39mm case and a minimalist design, featuring a small second subdial at 6 o’clock, increasing visual appeal and symmetry.
