The Unveiling of the Distinctive Ressence Type 3 BB2: An Oil-Filled Timepiece Defying Conventions

Published: 06 Nov 2025
A remarkable timepiece, the Ressence Type 3 BB2, defies traditional watchmaking techniques with its oil-filled construction.

The Ressence Type 3 BB2, a striking model from acclaimed independent watchmaker Ressence, is a testament to ground-breaking innovation. Cloaked in a sleek black exterior, the watch accurately symbolizes the brand’s pioneering spirit. Since its foundation in 2010 by industrial designer Benoit Mintiens, Ressence has been lauded for its bold, hands-free and crownless designs, totally unique within the industry.

The Type 3, the brand’s first oil-filled timepiece launched in 2013, is the cornerstone of Ressence’s reputation for avant-garde craftsmanship. The more sophisticated Type 3 BB2, follows this revolutionary legacy with panache. From afar, the novelty of a timepiece sans traditional crown might seem deceptively simple, but it conceals a labyrinthine complexity.

The Ressence Type 3 BB2 features an intriguing dual-chamber system. The upper chamber contains the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) module, immersed in 3.57ml of oil, set apart from the lower chamber by a thin black DLC-coated titanium mid-case. The lower chamber houses an extensively modified ETA 2824 automatic movement.

This disconnection creates a captivating illusion of a digital smartwatch due to the seamless interaction between the two chambers. Moreover, the pebble-shape case and distortion-free domed display only further enhance this illusion. On the contrary, the Type 3 remains a purely analogue, wholly mechanical masterpiece.
