Universal Genève Honours Legacy with New Tribute to Compax Chronographs
In a triumphant return to the industry, Universal Genève has announced the launch of six new Tribute to Compax chronographs. Drawing deep from the 1960s design well, the timepieces are meticulously crafted reproductions of the original Compax, famously sported by Finnish model Nina Rindt. Showcasing a faithful attention to detail and a reverence for tradition, the new models take elements from Rindt’s style and marry them with modern watch-making techniques.
The six new watches are split into two sets, each set boasting three visually stunning pieces. Each timepiece honors the original design, with case dimensions measuring 36mm by 12.67mm and a 19mm lug width. The cases reimagined for the modern age with a choice of 18k white or rose gold, complete with traditional twisted lyre lugs and pump pushers. The bezels remain fixed and are comprised of aluminium.
Moving away from tradition, the brand slots a refurbished and restored Universal caliber 281 beneath the Compax chronograph’s surface. This step signifies an ambitious in-house move for Universal Genève, a shift from the Valjoux 72 movement that powered the original 1964-1967 Compax watches. The hand-wound movement boasts a 36-hour power reserve and operates at 18,000 vph.
Finally, a nod to the iconic Nina Rindt comes in the form of the Bund strap choice. Famously, Nina Rindt gifted herself a Bund strap, transforming her Compax into a personal fashion statement that uniquely stood out. Universal Genève embraces this history, incorporating the Bund strap into the Tribute collection, and hinting at the brand’s future direction.
