Stepping into Time: The Stunning Evolution of Citizen's Mechanical Watches

Published: 03 Sep 2025
Charting a journey of innovation, Citizen has successfully transitioned from traditional quartz watches to high-quality automatic timepieces. The latest rendition, Citizen Series8 831, is a testament to this transformation.

Not too many years ago, Citizen’s modern watch collection was largely driven by an array of remarkable quartz modules. However, observing the enduring appeal of sub-$2,000 mechanical timepieces within the market, Citizen embarked on a remarkable journey. This driven endeavor was aimed at crafting a series of high-quality, visually captivating, and competitively priced automatic watches which would stand strong in the bustling timepiece market. The Series8 line, with the 831 model as one of its flagships, accentuates this successful journey.

In an intriguing move, Citizen also introduced a concept, named ‘Citizen Premier’. Drawing parallels with the Citizen Signature concept, ‘Premier’ is not pointing to the most expensive pieces in their collection, but refers to a specific tier of products that deliver superior craftsmanship at an aggressive price. The concept currently consists of Citizen’s tech-focused Eco-Drive Attesa watches, and the automatic mechanical watches that form the Citizen Series8.

The geometric case inspired by 1970s design aesthetics is featured alongside a round, polished bezel, replete with bold octagonal elements. An added highlight is the uniquely large and easy-to-grasp crown, integrated into the case for a sleek appearance. Dashing in design without ignoring functionality, the Series8 831 is water-resistant up to 100 meters without the need for a screw-down crown. Finally, coupled with a broad lug structure, the Series8 831 holds a prominent spot on the wrist, making a distinct style statement with each tick of the second hand.
