Casting a New Anchor: The Impressive Diver Design of Paulin Watches' Latest Release, The Mara
Paulin Watches has been stirring the watchmaking pot since its establishment in 2013 by three dynamic sisters. Renowned for creating timepieces reflecting bold typography, distinctive form, and striking colour, they have skillfully turned heads in the horology domain. Taking this creative affair further, they’re embarking on a journey into the world of precision professional watches with The Mara. Named after the Scots Gaelic word for ‘of the sea’, Mara acknowledges the brand’s shift towards diver watches. An impressive blend of serious utility and iconic Paulin brand aesthetics, Mara signifies an amalgam of graphic clarity and delicacy. The case of the Mara is a refined reinvigoration of the brand’s earlier Modul design with crisper facets and alternating finishes. With a diameter of 39.7mm, 13.5mm thickness, and 48mm lug-to-lug, it exudes an imposing persona. The case accommodates a unidirectional 120-click bezel in domed sapphire with Super-LumiNova markings, well-suited for gloved operation. A screw-down crown qualifies a substantial 300m water-resistance rating. Reflecting the brand’s distinctive design, the dial accentuates character and clarity. Bold geometric hour markers, save for numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock, a meticulously crafted minute track, and the signature ‘Wim’ typeface breathe life into the dial. Despite its playful essence, the lollipop seconds hand with a contrasting coloured tip ensures seriousness. Mara’s machinery heart beats with the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement showcasing a 28,800 vibrations/hour frequency. With a robust structure enabling cost controls, the timepiece gifts a generous 68-hour power reserve. Mara is paired with two swappable straps: a custom-moulded HNBR rubber strap and a Tide fabric strap, the latter crafted from recycled fishing nets with Italian Alcantara lining. Every Mara watch will be released from 22 August 2025, priced nominally at GBP 1,200 or USD 1,650. Though not a limited edition, Mara’s production will remain intentionally conservative, preserving its exclusivity and value.
