Anoma's A1 Optical Watch: The Fusion of Distortion Artistry and Timeless Horology
Anoma, the offbeat microbrand founded in London by Matteo Violet-Vianello, is turning heads in the watch industry through its innovative approach to design. Their first creation, the A1, draws inspiration from irregular forms found in art, architecture, and nature. Now, the A1 returns in a new guise, the A1 Optical. This new variant boasts a mind-bending Op Art dial, delivering a mesmerising illusion that challenges the viewer’s perception. Often dissatisfied with the predictability and high price tags of traditional watch designs, Violet-Vianello saw a niche for intriguing designs coupled with affordability. Although not a watchmaker or designer by profession, his commitment to design excellence is evident in Anoma’s creations. The A1 Optical’s distinct, rounded triangular shape mirrors that of stones eroded by water, offering smooth lines and an organic feel. Its dimensions, 39mm x 38mm, combined with its asymmetrical stainless steel opting for a lug-less design and recessed crown maintain the unconventional aesthetic. The piece-de-resistance of the A1 Optical, however, is the unique Op Art dial designed by optical artist Adam Fuhrer. Characterised by distorted geometrical patterns inducing the illusion of movement, Op Art became popular in the 1960s. The dial’s pattern, consisting of engraved triangles, seems to move and bend as light strikes them, adding depth and dynamism to the design. Fuhrer’s painstaking work involved carving rounded triangles onto the metal base, then sandblasting and hand-polishing them for the desired glow. The Anoma A1 Optical offers a choice of copper or silver dials, paired with matching leaf-shaped hands and a grey Italian leather strap. Powered by the reliable Swiss Sellita SW100 automatic movement, the watch bears an impressive 42-hour power reserve. Limited to just 150 numbered pieces per dial colour, every watch also includes an original and numbered artwork by Adam Fuhrer. The initial batch of Anoma A1 Optical watches are to be delivered together with an original and numbered artwork by Adam Fuhrer, retailing at GBP 2,200 (excluding tax), and will be available starting on 4 August, with official sales beginning on 7 August at 14:00 GMT, with projected shipping commencing in October 2025. Additional non-numbered pieces will be released later in the year.
