Dive into the Fascinating History: When Did We Start Counting Seconds?

In the grand timeline of horologic history, the second was a late, yet significant arrival. Original pocket watches merely featured hour hands, owing to the extent of inaccuracy in movements that made even minute hands seem impractical. However, the mid-17th century witnessed game-changing inventions from the brilliant mind of Dutch scientist and horologist, Christiaan Huygens.

In 1656, Huygens launched the pendulum for clocks, a revolutionary development that escalated precision from a half-hour or more per day to a matter of seconds. Notably, in 1675, Huygens patented the balance spring for pocket watches, significantly enhancing their accuracy and practicality. Although English horologist, Robert Hooke, proclaimed to have evolved it earlier, it was indeed Huygens who succeeded in implementation. The advent of pendulum and balance spring spawned the practical utilisation of minute hands in clocks and watches, with the presence of seconds hand shortly ensuing.

Though initial endeavors to introduce minute hands predated Huygens’ achievements, the impediment in movements made their usefulness questionable. However, by the late 17th century, clocks across Europe exhibited minute hands as a standard feature, owing to the widespread usage of the pendulum. Pocket watches were not far behind in this evolution due to the balance spring and more rapid adaptation of movements.

Like their predecessors, the seconds hand too had a journey filled with trials. The late 16th century watchmakers made proverbial ‘seconds’ attempts, mostly as proofs of concept. However, the onset of the 1690s witnessed the inclusion of a dedicated fourth wheel in gear trains, owing to the precision rendered by the balance spring. Subsequently, the positioning of seconds hands in separate sub-dials became a trend, with the off-centre fourth wheel of the vertically stacked movements of the era making central seconds impracticable.
