Rediscovering the Lost Art of Italian Watchmaking through the Revival of OISA 1937

Published: 29 May 2025
In the heart of Italy, a timeless brand; OISA (Orologeria Italiana Società Azionaria), has made a resounding comeback, marking the revival of Italian-made watch movements.

While Switzerland, Japan, and China have come to dominate the world of watch-making, little is often said about Italy’s rich horological legacy. However, Italy’s contribution to the timekeeping world - particularly with the manufacture of movements - is monumental, dating back to the early 20th century. This proud tradition is championed by brands like OISA - Orologeria Italiana Società Azionaria - founded by Domenico Morezzi in Milan in 1937. This brand, a core part of Italy’s watchmaking industry, played a significant role until the 1970s when it witnessed an unfortunate decline.

But there is a plot twist to this tale. The company has been revived by none other than the founder’s grandson, Carlo Boggio Ferraris, who unfolds a new chapter in the brand’s history. Boggio Ferraris, who is deeply involved in the watch component industry, has embarked on a mission to bring back the golden era of Italian movement production with the reincarnation of OISA. In fact, their latest model was enthusiastically received by a passionate Italian collector, equipped with the new calibre 29-50 Cinque Ponti by OISA 1937.

Discovering this re-edition of a page from horological history proves to be a joyous experience for the Italian timepiece aficionado. He first came across the rebirth of Orologeria Italiana Società Azionaria while casually browsing a watch forum in spring 2022, and was hooked by the brand’s compelling vision. Boggio Ferraris aims to rejuvenate the Italian watchmaking industry by producing true ‘made in Italy’ movements, moving away from trending reused mechanics disguised in new brand names.

Expectations were surpassed by the quality of the design and mechanics revealed on OISA’s webpage. The collector’s journey continued when he personally connected with Mr. Ferraris, gaining insight into the company’s vision and plans. The interaction wasn’t one of a mere retailer and customer, but more akin to a tailor and client, with a sense of personal dedication towards the craft. The renewed OISA 1937 demonstrates a promising leap towards Italy’s horological renaissance, capturing the timeless spirit of watchmaking artistry.
