The Vario Futurist Recaptures the Outlandish Aesthetics of 70s Wristwatch Design

Published: 28 Dec 2025
The Vario Futurist, a reincarnation of the distinctive wristwatch styles of the 70s, is the brand's latest offering that marries vintage inspiration with modern design.

Stepping into the fray and making its mark with 70s-inspired unconventional aesthetics is the Vario Futurist. This wristwatch represents a highly nostalgic period in timepiece fashion, characterised by unusual and truly striking designs, encapsulating an era when the industry was embracing aesthetic experiments with open arms.

The Vario brand is well-known for its reverence for vintage styles. In the past, it has offered a wide spectrum of designs ranging from military-style watches to more classic, dressy creations. The Vario Futurist, however, signifies a significant deviation from their conventional styles, marking a foray into a theme that draws heavily from retro-futuristic inspirations.

The Futurist’s crown sits recessed into the watch, ensuring easy use of standard flat-ended straps. This design, while offering an impressive 100 meters of water resistance, could pose a slight problem for larger-fingered individuals due to its relative inaccessibility. However, the flat, coin-shaped structure attempts to alleviate this by providing a decent surface grip on either side.

The party-piece feature of the Futurist, however, is its stunningly faceted sapphire crystal, reminiscent of certain 70s Seiko models. This feature truly captures and reiterates the essence of a bygone era, embedding it within a modern, fresh aesthetic that simultaneously celebrates and revives the past.
