Next Generation Reveals Unleashed Creativity at 28th Cartier Watchmaking Talents Competition
Continuing a tradition since 1995, the Cartier Prize for Watchmaking Talents of Tomorrow has emerged as an avenue to invest in the next generation of horologists. The competition cultivates both technical mastery and inherent creativity as it challenges participating apprentices to reimagine timepiece movements based on a defined theme.\ The latest edition saw eleven promising watchmaking apprentices and technicians from France, Switzerland, and Belgium manifest their interpretations of the theme ‘Shifting the balance: Reading and understanding time differently’. The task at hand was to redesign a classic Cartier desk clock movement based on motion of a pendulum, thus breaking away from traditional concepts of time understanding.\ This unique approach to watch making, where inspiration precedes technicalities is a philosophy deeply rooted into Cartier’s own identity as a brand. The challenge was reminiscent of Cartier’s mystery clocks, the ‘Révélation d’une Panthère’ watch, and other iconic designs.\ Each contestant was given a budget of CHF 500 and a span of eighty hours over three months to bring their visions to fruition. In this journey, they had the choice to seek mentorship. Given that most contenders are students balancing academic and extracurricular commitments, the level of creativity and execution displayed was astounding.\ The ‘Apprentice Watchmakers Prize’ for this edition was bagged by Aymeric Peters from IATA, Namur, Belgium. His creation, ‘Silence Choisi (Chosen Silence)’, a clock that manifests time only on user’s demand, beautifully depicted the essence of the competition’s theme.
