Step Into the Zenith De Luca Universe: From the Italian Importers’ Request to Its Stint as Rolex’s Timeless Icon
Traversing the realm of timekeepers can uncover several diamonds in the rough, one such gem being the captivating Zenith De Luca. The De Luca, produced from 1988 to 1996, is a sparkling chapter in Zenith’s illustrious liberation and reinvention, signaling their phoenix-like rise from the ashes. This timepiece of transition, created at the behest of Italian importers, is still remembered for its enticing allure and riveting influence on watch making.
During the early 80s, Zenith, famous for providing movements to Rolex and Ebel, did not manufacture their own chronographs. However, the De Luca revolutionized this, with its design strikingly bearing resemblance to the Zenith A277. Instead of relying on the dependable 146, the initial De Lucas featured the 3019 hidden beneath the case, which then underwent modifications to birth the Zenith 40.0, followed by the cal 400.
The De Luca’s four variants, inextricably intertwined with three different styles of handset (paddle, dauphine, Mercedes), three divergent pusher sets (screw-down, inverted, standard cap), and an array of dial markings coupled with lume plot variations, create a mesmerising spectacle that’s impossible to ignore.
Surprisingly enough, the 40mm steel case and the rotating bezel remained constant throughout the watch’s iterations. Looking closely, one cannot help but compare it against the Rolex Daytona, with speculation further intensifying with the advent of De Luca IIs flaunting their immovable tachymeter bezels.
