A Renovated Classic: The Tudor Northflag Rises with GMT Function

Originally introduced in 2015, the Tudor North Flag held a significant place for the brand. This release marked a new design direction, taking inspiration from the angular, exploration-laden charm of the 1970s Ranger II. The Tudor North Flag was more than a nod to design history; it was a kinetic marvel, being the first Tudor equipped with a manufacture movement. Visible through a clear sapphire caseback, the introduction of the Calibre MT5621 movement was a noteworthy milestone for Tudor. Fast forward to 2021, the North Flag was taken out of productionaligning with the rise of in-house movements as a signature aspect of the brand.

Tudor’s 1970s Ranger II continues to play a major role in shaping the Northflag’s identity. The reinterpretation of the Ranger II’s exploration-oriented sports watch design serves as the foundation for the new Northflag. The seminal black-and-yellow dial, an integrated design, a sizeable bracelet, and a 40mm case all come together to form a modern take on the age-old classic.

The refreshed Northflag features enhanced dimensions. The case diameter remains at 40mm, the thickness has been minimised from 13.4mm to 12.7mm, and the lug-to-lug has been slotted down to 48.8mm from 50mm. The changes subtle though they may seem, greatly improve the wearability and overall profile of the watch on the wrist. The Northflag projects a more refined aesthetic, while maintaining its sturdy character.

The 100m water-resistant stainless-steel case remains largely brushed, preserving the original’s tool-watch essence. Replacing the distinctive black ceramic ring on the steel bezel of the inaugural North Flag is a fixed, brushed, and angled bezel – a decision which may stir longing among some enthusiasts. The new bezel streamlines the shape and lends a more slender profile to the watch. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is used for both the front and the caseback, allowing appreciation of the watch’s movement. To finish off, the screw-down crown at 3 o’clock gently deviates from the norm, carrying over an understated element from the original North Flag. With these numerous modifications and upgrades, the Tudor Northflag exudes a more refined identity, all while honouring its storied past.
