The Pioneering Spirit of China's Independent Watchmakers and Their Pursuit of Artistic Precision

Switzerland may be the heart of watch manufacturing, but it is not the only country to appreciate and perform the delicate art of horology. Global love for watchmaking stretches across all corners of the world, and China is fast becoming a prominent landscape in this field. The ‘Middle Kingdom’ is experiencing an upsurge in highly proficient brands that are leaving their mark with a beautiful amalgamation of tradition, innovative design, exceptional craftsmanship, and extensive technical expertise. The time has come to shed antiquated stigmas and recognise the creative power blooming in China’s horology sector. One of the first independent Chinese watchmakers to gain attention was Qin Gan. His Pastorale II, launched in 2024, is characterised by a 38.5mm diameter and 9.5mm height, along with a stunning champlevé enamel finish on its silver or champagne-coloured dial. The masterful in-house manufacturing and attention to detail of the calibre 1810, based on the Longines 30L architecture, showcase the watchmaker’s precise craftsmanship. However, they come at a price - roughly 65,000 USD for one of the only 15 pieces produced annually. Another intriguing entry was by Fam Al Hut with the starkly unconventional Mark 1 Bi-Axis Tourbillon. Its distinctive features include a pill-shaped case, a bi-retrograde display section for time and a bi-axis tourbillon escapement under a domed sapphire crystal top section. Since its release, the brand has further developed its design, rechristened it the Mobiüs, won the GPHG Audacity Prize, and gradually continues to expand their in-house manufacturing.
