Explore the dynamic world of Kortela Valta, a rising star in Finnish independent watchmaking.
Finland, renowned as the ‘Land of the Thousand Lakes’, is home to many extraordinary watchmakers. Its contribution to the horology industry is palpable, with famous names like Kari Voutilainen and Stepan Sarpaneva. Yet, the magic of Finnish watchmaking doesn’t end here as it ushers in a new era with a dynamic duo - Kortela Valta. Comprising of Roope Kortela and Rene Valta, this pair discovered their shared passion for timepiece creation at the Finnish School of Watchmaking. Together, they have created the truly singular watch, the Eka.
At Kortela Valta, both founders draw from various experiential backgrounds. Roope, at 40, has already amassed a wealth of experience, having worked in different roles within the Finnish-branded consumer goods company, Fiskars. Yet, it wasn’t until he ventured into watchmaking that he felt truly at home. Now at Kortela Valta, he leads the artistic direction, design, 3D modelling and handles most in-house machining.
Rene, on the other hand, is a 27-year-old multi-talent, adept at everything from filing superb inner angled bevels to restoring wrecked Mercedes-Benzes. Fearless and intuitive, he naturally takes the lead in prototyping at Kortela Valta. In addition, he is also responsible for restoring old Omega movements and final assembly of all timepieces.
In a world dominated by Swiss watchmaking brands, this Finnish duo has proven that passion, creativity, and dedication to craftsmanship can carve out a unique space. With Kortela Valta’s rise, there is certainly more to anticipate from the intriguing world of Finnish watchmakers.
