Celebrating its 100th anniversary of its first camera production in 2025, the illustrious Leica, helmed by Ernst Leitz, has been at the forefront of revolutionizing optics and photography. With roots steeped in Wetzlar, Germany, as far back as 1914, Leica produced its groundbreaking ‘Kleinfilmkamera’ or ‘small-film-camera’. Barnack conceived an ingenious idea which replaced the bulky picture plate and camera device with a quick-exposing cinema film tucked into a compact canister. This led to the creation of small negative images later magnified via a special device to imprint on a larger photographic paper, resulting in the composition.

Leica cameras soon became synonymous with the miniaturization principles and precision mechanics of watchmaking that transformed the once bulky photographing process into a portable and quicker process. In the early 20th century, major Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre stepped into the camera market, highlighting the overlapping characteristics of cameras and watches from both an engineering and functional perspective. For instance, inside a film camera, a key component, the shutter speed regulator, was essentially a timing device. Pioneered by Leica, even early cameras could attain a top shutter speed of 1/500 of a second.
