Bombarded with Fakes, Luxury Watch Brands Turn to Tech to Authenticate Timepieces
The rising tide of counterfeit luxury watches has catapulted leading brands into action, muscling up their anti-fake mechanisms for guaranteed authenticity. Travellers can easily procure a fake Rolex for a fraction of the price in places like Shanghai or Thailand, reflecting the significant challenges posed by counterfeiting on the luxury watch market. Notably, Rolexes aren’t the only timepieces at risk, with Vacheron Constantin, Omega, and Jaeger-LeCoultre among other brands battling this menace.
Thanks to loose ‘Swiss Made’ standards, some Chinese regions, such as Guangdong Province, have access to original machines used for making watch cases and bracelets. This situation makes it possible to produce ‘super fakes’ so convincing they can fool even seasoned watch connoisseurs. Further complicating attempts at detection, counterfeiters often use genuine parts to mask fraudulent movements.
Rolex, the world’s most profitable luxury watchmaker, is a particularly attractive counterfeit target, accounting for over 25% of fake watches worldwide. In response, the brand has introduced several security measures, some visible to naked eyes and others detectable only under magnification or UV light. The advent of such sophisticated features, alongside consumers becoming more informed, is making it increasingly difficult for counterfeiters to peddle fake timepieces.
